  1. Purpose:

The purpose of the position is to conduct research and collaborate with researchers in topics related to assessment of sustainability impacts of forest-based circular bioeconomy with an aim to evaluate and improve post-harvest product hotspots in the value chain. Primary program areas include value-added bioproducts from forest biomass, packaging, wood-based composites, and building materials. The individual will conduct research, write peer reviewed journal articles and reports, develop and participate in new research proposals, serve on graduate student committees, and present at appropriate state, national, and international conferences.

  1. Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Identify and analyze value chains of forest based bioproducts.

  • Advise/co-advise graduate students.

  • Represent U of Maine at appropriate conferences.

  • Publish results in appropriate peer reviewed journals.

  • Develop research proposals.

  • Develop and maintain professional relationships that reflect courtesy, civility, and mutual respect.

  • Build productive relationships with internal and external constituencies.

  • Utilize coaching and mentoring methods which provide an environment that is anticipatory, supportive, and encourages constructive feedback on performance.

  • Commit to organizational improvement by identifying opportunities to improve, and recommending possible alternatives for a situation.                                                                                                                                             
  • Perform other reasonably related duties as assigned.

III. Knowledge and Skill Qualifications

Required:

  • A Ph.D. in technical, engineering, decision science, or business-related discipline.

  • Experience in life cycle analysis, industrial ecology, techno-economics, and supply chain analysis.

  • Demonstrated excellent organizational, written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.

  • Applicants must be eligible to accept employment in the United States at the time the appointment is made.

Preferred:

  • Knowledge in processing of bioproducts (wood composites, mass timber panels, nanocellulose, etc.) building construction and operation, biomass to energy conversion.

 
  1. Work Environment

Work is performed at the University of Maine, Orono, ME, U.S.A. The employee will be expected to work collaboratively to develop methodologies and conduct experiment, responding        flexibly and creatively to input from other researchers in the team.

IV. Others information

  • Work Year:  Full-time, fiscal year appointment.

  • Work Schedule:  Normal University of Maine business hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Due to the nature of the position, work beyond regular hours (to include evenings and weekends) will be nec essary to meet the requirements of the position. The employee shall establish regular office hours and in consultation with the supervisor, adjust the work schedule as appropriate.

  • Position Type:  Soft Money Grant funded.  Contingent on funding and successful performance.

  • Work Year:  Full-time, fiscal year appointment.

  • Reports to: Principal Investigator: USDA ARS Forest Products Program
